Gaming for Social Good | Inspiring Generosity

February 20th, 2012 by ifdy

After doing well with their previous business, RMH Teleservices, the Hansells wanted their next venture to do some good, help uplift corporate America and encourage employees. But they also wanted to reach out to the general public. That?s how they got the idea for ToonUps a decade ago.

Cause Gaming: Games for Good

ToonUps builds online games and apps that help encourage people positively to do good right on their social networks, like Facebook. Their mission is to ?brighten the world.?

?The gaming world is the biggest revenue driver for Facebook,? says Ray Hansel, Co-Founder and CEO. ?About 50% of Facebook users are playing games.?

In fact, according to Greg Hansell, VP of Product Development, ?A vast majority of ad buys are from gaming companies on Facebook.?

And gaming isn?t just for teenage boys, he says. On Facebook, the typical gamer is a 30 year-old female.

?Gaming has become a prevalent medium,? Greg says. ?People say, ?I?m not playing games, I?m hanging out with my friends?.?

With this in mind, ToonUps saw the opportunity to spread some good with gaming apps and positive psychology.

?When you do a good deed . . . it helps you feel better [and] when you share that with others, you?re spreading that good feeling,? Ray says.

Ray says that ToonUps? community of do-gooders take their gaming deeds and go beyond to support charities with donations.

?It closes the loop of cause gaming,? he says.

Building A Better World

A Better World

ToonUps first Facebook app in cause gaming is A Better World. The concept behind the game was based off of the popular virtual gifts users were sending to each other for all sorts of occasions.

A Better World was designed to reward players of doing good deeds both online and offline. Players can report these good deeds, share their gratitude, hopes, and dreams, send positive messages to each other, and earn currency (Do Good Gold and Positive Points).

In the meantime, users are working towards building their house. With more accomplishments, they can see it grow, with more rooms and floors. Anyone with a big house is because they did a lot of good.

Building Communities for Good

Their first social good campaign was with CURE International, a nonprofit that provides various surgeries for kids in underdeveloped countries. The game challenged its players to do one million acts of good, and if they collectively reached that goal, they?d pay for 10 kids to get surgeries to walk. They reached their goal with a week left to go in the two months allotted.

This month, A Better World has partnered with Integral Heart, a foundation founded by a husband and wife offering educational programs in Guatemala. The players were challenge to send 50,000 hearts by the end of February, and if they reach their goal, they?ll bring electricity to two Guatemalan schools.

A Better World has taken the concept of online gaming beyond its original intent. And the results of cause gaming are real and tangible. Users see that they were directly involved in bringing light to two schools and providing life-altering surgeries for children in underdeveloped countries.

This is still a very new concept, but there?s no doubt that it?ll continue to be explored, and creative ways of using it for social good will be developed. It?s exciting to see where this will go, but most importantly, how much social good it?ll help produce.

Do you think cause gaming will one day play an important part in the work of nonprofits?

Internet Marketing Tips: Link Building Strategies For Website Traffic

By wahmsonline

For those who run their business from home or maintain a website for their offline business, they know that getting quality traffic to their website is necessary in order for them to gain leads and customers online. Without leads and customers, any business will fail due to lack of sales. Using link building strategies can greatly help to increase your websites traffic.

Building a business from home can be rewarding when done right and it is successful, but so many internet marketers fail because they lack the skills necessary to get their website seen by many. Yet there are tons of competitors who are doing the same exact thing every day with much success.

Increased web traffic puts more eyes on your business. How do you find a way to get your site in front of the same leads that your competitor does? Link building is one way that you can achieve that goal.

You can use techniques such as article writing and submitting to directories, blog commenting, blogging with PLR and more to attain quality backlinks pointing towards your business website.

Using link building strategies to gain targeted visitors can help to increase the productivity of your website. While you do want visitors, you don?t want just any visitors. You want leads and prospective customers that are hungry for what you are offering.

You could be offering an optin emailing list squeeze page where you plan to use email to build a relationship with your leads, a blog where you frequently post or the website where you have products available for purchase.

Regardless of where you are sending traffic, if those who are visiting your site have an interest in that particular topic, there is a greater chance that you will get email optins and sales.

Implementing link building strategies can help your website to achieve a higher page rank within the search engines. This propels your site closer to page one in the search engine results. Backlinks help to determine which page your website will show up on when someone searches in the search engine.

The closer you can get to page one, the better chance it is that you will get the results that you want.

Keep in mind that many don?t take the time to search through twenty pages of results, after looking through the first page some may venture to the second or third page.
If your website is on page nine it?s a great chance that it won?t be seen.

Search engines like Google are looking for websites that have plenty of relevant backlinks from authority sites. These are backlinks acquired from websites that are popular within the search engine.

Gaining backlinks from a relevant website carries more weight than irrelevant backlinks. Search engines like Google won?t be fooled by random links.

When you gain backlinks from relevant sites this gives you a chance to gain some of their popularity. Making the most of your online marketing efforts to improve your website?s rank could be the difference between gaining traffic and making sales or not.

How To Do Small Business Internet Marketing

When it comes to marketing, it makes what you sell more attractive. But in order to do so, one should first get a way of getting the message over to the masses; and one of the most efficient ways of doing that in the modern globe is over internet marketing. designed initially for military functions, the internet now has millions of users logging on to it from all over the globe for various reasons. In this article we shall focus our attention on a certain aspect of internet marketing, and if you are a small business owner this article about small business internet marketing would definitely give you something to think about.

Unless you own a substantial scale business with a huge revenue, it is very tough to get the desired output through orthodox way of marketing. This is because with orthodox marketing ways, in order to effectively get the message about your product to the people, it would require a significant amount of capital, and it could sometimes even prove to be an unprofitable investment. This is why small business internet marketing is a very productive endeavor; with small business internet marketing, an regular businessman/ businesswoman could get the desired results of marketing at a smaller cost compared to the use of orthodox ways.

One of the greatest and fundamental styles of doing small business internet marketing is to have your own web site which gives information about your products and your business. As there are many among us who prefer to browse through the internet until they know what they require and then straight away purchase certain services or products, having your own web page is a must for small business internet marketing.

Just like in conventional ways of marketing, internet marketing also has its limits when it comes to the amount one can afford to invest on marketing. therefore in small business internet marketing one should hold in mind that just like one can t promote his or her products with billboards in densely populated regions without spending few thousand dollars, one can t put advertisements of web pages with high traffic without investing a significant number.

Due to this component one requires to find cheap, yet effective, way of getting your message through to the general public when it comes to small business internet marketing; getting your web page search engine optimized, and posting links to your web page on other web sites can be some of your choices.

Apple may face iPad export ban in China trademark row | Hot News ...

HONG KONG/SHANGHAI |
Tue Feb 14, 2012 2:32pm EST

HONG KONG/SHANGHAI (Reuters) ? A Chinese tech firm that claims it still owns the iPad trademark will seek a ban on exports of Apple Inc?s computer tablets from China, which could deal a blow to the U.S. technology giant?s sales worldwide.

Proview Technology (Shenzhen) Co Ltd is petitioning Chinese customs to stop shipments of Apple?s popular iPads in and out of China, but has not received a response, lawyer Xie Xianghui told Asian Legal Business, a Thomson Reuters publication.

Apple said it bought Proview?s worldwide rights to the trademark in 10 different countries several years ago, including

rights to the iPad name from a Taiwan subsidiary. However, Proview claims the sale did not cover the trademark?s use in China.

?Proview refuses to honor their agreement with Apple in China and a Hong Kong court has sided with Apple in this matter,? an Apple spokeswoman said.

Customs officials could not be reached for comment, and Proview declined to comment.

Apple could be in a very difficult situation if it had mistakenly bought rights from the wrong Proview subsidiary, said Thomas Chan, a Los Angeles-based attorney who has represented companies in trademark licensing negotiations with Apple.

?They?ve got a real, real problem,? Chan said. ?They?re going to pay through the nose.?

Apple?s legal tussle with Proview Technology (Shenzhen) over the trademark name iPad, is emerging as the latest headache for the U.S. giant in a booming market and highlights the legal challenges facing foreign multinationals operating in China.

Not only is China a huge consumer market but it is also a major production base for the U.S. company?s iconic products including the iPad, iPhone and iPod media player.

This week Apple announced it had agreed to an outside inspection of working conditions at its main contract manufacturers, including Foxconn?s plants in southern China.

Apple lost a case to Proview Technology (Shenzhen) in a Shenzhen court in southern China late last year when the court agreed that Proview owned the iPad trademark.

Apple has appealed the decision and a final hearing is due to start in the southern Guangdong High Court on Feb 29. This court?s decision will be final under the Chinese legal process.

Proview?s latest salvo comes a day after media reports that authorities in some Chinese cities had ordered retailers to stop selling Apple?s iPad due to the dispute.

Proview has also filed lawsuits against Apple in Shanghai and Shenzhen, and retailers selling iPads in Futian and Huizhou, located in the south of the country.

Apple?s options are limited to either settling with Proview Technology (Shenzhen), appealing to a higher court, or facing devastating enforcement actions in China, legal experts said.

?There are two views we can take here. One view is, Apple was not sufficiently prudent and therefore, this was missed by Apple and its attorneys,? said Elliot Papageorgiou, a Shanghai-based partner and executive at law firm Rouse Legal (China).

?A more charitable view would be that, Apple said that for business reasons we need to use this brand and as far as the name in China is concerned, let?s cross the bridge when we come to it,? he said.

Proview lawyer Xie, partner of Grandall Law Firm?s Shenzhen office, said Apple is not in negotiations with the Chinese firm.

Local media reported recently that Proview was taking legal action, seeking up to 10 billion yuan ($1.6 billion) in compensation from Apple for trademark infringement.

?Without a win in that Shenzhen case, all the other actions, whether it is administrative or with different courts, customs, Apple is not in a good position at all,? said Stan Abrams, an IP law professor at Beijing?s Central University of Finance and Economics.

Europe's Internet revolt: protesters see threats in antipiracy treaty

Anger over proposed antipiracy treaty ACTA was expected to bring thousands to Europe's streets today. Supporters say it will better protect intellectual labor, while opponents see free speech threats.?

Despite freezing conditions across much of the Continent, thousands are expected to the streets of European cities today ? but the protests aren't about austerity measures, bailouts, or the Middle East. They are about an obscure international copyright agreement that protesters say threatens free speech online and the future of the Internet.?

ACTA, the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, follows the now-delayed US legislation Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA). Proponents say the agreement will protect the economic value of intellectual and artistic labor and create a framework to enforce existing laws. Opponents counter that it forces Internet service providers (ISPs) to police users, threatening individual freedom.?

Confusion reigns: previous drafts of ACTA would have required ISPs to disconnect users who repeatedly downloaded copyrighted material without permission, but the most recent versions leave the question of ISPs' legal liability to the participating countries. Other controversial measures, such as searches for counterfeit goods at border crossings, which many feared would apply to the contents of laptops and MP3 players, are restricted to commercial goods shipping. (To read the document, click?here.)

The European Commission and US Trade Representative have both issued "myth-busting" documents attempting to allay the worst fears.

Despite this and changes to the text, ACTA remains a heated point of contention.

Sebastian Meyer, attorney with law firm Brandi in Bielefeld, Germany, says the entire affair would have benefited from greater transparency.?

"I find it quite interesting that most persons who protest against ACTA focus on the way the text was negotiated. The other major issue seems [to be] ? from the perspective of the protesting persons ? the fear of a tighter surveillance of Internet usage. However, protesters have to accept that the Internet is neither a legal vacuum nor unlegislated area," he says.

Twenty-two EU member states endorsed to the agreement last month, aiming to strengthen enforcement of intellectual property rights. Yesterday, Germany joined Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Latvia in pulling back from the agreement, and an EU parliament vote on it, not expected until May at the earliest, may scupper the deal. ?

Australia, Canada, Japan, Morocco, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, and the US signed in October 2011.?

Judge to weigh requests on restriction on Sandusky (AP)

BELLEFONTE, Pa. ? Dueling requests to modify the bail conditions Friday for former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky will pit neighbors' fears he's a danger to children against the defense claim the one-time assistant to Joe Paterno deserves to see his grandchildren.

Bail restrictions and the possible use of an out-of-county jury will be among the issues presented to Judge John M. Cleland at Sandusky's pretrial hearing.

The state attorney general's office has asked for tougher bail rules, arguing that the provisions of Sandusky's house arrest should be altered to require him to stay indoors after neighbors complained they've seen him on his back porch, watching children play in a nearby schoolyard.

Sandusky's attorney counters that his client has satisfied the rules of his release and the restrictions on him should be eased so he can see his family.

Cleland has asked defense and prosecution lawyers to narrow the disputes on which he will have to rule, a list that includes whether Sandusky should be given transcripts of secret grand jury testimony before trial, and which other records prosecutors must turn over.

Sandusky arrived at the courthouse in a suit Friday morning, entering through the same entrance he used in December for a preliminary hearing that was abruptly waived.

Sandusky faces 52 criminal counts for alleged sexual misconduct involving boys over 15 years, actions that police and prosecutors say have included violent sexual assault inside the Penn State football team facilities. He has denied the allegations.

Prosecutors have said the special position Penn State holds for people in Centre County would make it a challenge for jurors there to render a fair verdict. Sandusky, 68, wants a Centre County jury.

Both sides want to change the rules of Sandusky's house arrest. He is seeking permission to allow his 11 grandchildren to visit his home, accompanied by a parent, as well as to be allowed to communicate with them by phone or computer.

The attorney general's office, on the other hand, has asked Cleland to restrict Sandusky indoors, citing concerns raised for the safety of nearby school children.

"Such concerns will only mushroom if defendant is permitted to roam at will outside his house," they said.

In response, Sandusky attorney Joe Amendola said safety concerns were unfounded, and that Sandusky has complied with bail rules in the months since his arrest.

Pennsylvania's speedy trial rules give the state a year from the filing of the complaint to bring a defendant to trial, unless he or she is in jail, then the limit is six months. No trial date has been set.

Sandusky was arrested on two sets of charges, filed against him in November and December.

The scandal led the Penn State trustees to push out university president Graham Spanier and football coach Joe Paterno, who died last month.

Two Penn State administrators are awaiting trial on charges they lied to a grand jury investigating Sandusky and failed to properly report suspected child abuse. Gary Schultz, a former vice president, and Tim Curley, the athletic director, have both denied the allegations.

4 Ways to Improve Your Business Communication Skills ...

business communication

Business communication

Any entrepreneur knows that the real secret to doing business is creating relationships. So, what better way to improve your business than by working on your communication skills? Next time you think about contacting a potential client or emailing your boss with some bad news, check out these four tips to make sure the way you communicate is working for you, not against you.

1. Keep it Professional

There is nothing wrong with small talk when you?re doing business with clients and colleagues. In fact, it?s nice to share personal stories or a funny anecdote once in awhile to build relationships. But we have all been annoyed at times trying to wrap up a deal with someone who simply will not stop talking about a past relationship, what they are having for dinner, or their daughter?s wedding plans. Don?t let that someone be you! When it comes to including your personal life in your professional relationships, make sure that you keep unnecessary information to a minimum and only share stories that improve your relationships.

2. Be Honest

This should be the golden rule of business communication. Sure, it?s true that there are times when you need to bend the truth in order to do business, but making a habit of it is a surefire way to kill your professional reputation. If you are ever caught lying to a client or colleague, you can probably kiss that business relationship goodbye. You wouldn?t want to do business with someone that you can?t trust, and no one else does either.

3. Avoid Blatant Self-Promotion

There is a time and place for advertising, but small talk with a client is not that time. Although making connections and marketing your skills and products is very important, if your products and services are worth buying, they should speak for themselves. It is much better to speak to clients and business associates as if you know your services are selling well, not like you are trying to make an extra buck within a short conversation.

4. Embrace New Communication Styles

If you have been in business for more than 20 years, you have seen first hand how the playing field has changed with the presence of the internet. Our business communication styles have had to change, as well. Now, instead of a phone call, most people will send a text or email. And instead of writing formally, most professionals use a type of cyber shorthand in order to communicate with colleagues. So if you are still stuck sending a fax when you could easily share a Google Doc, it?s time to wake up and participate in the modern world. Not only will it make you seem more ?with it,? it will attract clients and colleagues of all ages.

US women to play 2 games in Japan

updated 6:43 p.m. ET Feb. 9, 2012

CHICAGO - The U.S. Women's soccer team will play in Japan against the host country and against Brazil in April.

The games will be April 1 against the World Cup champion Japanese at Sendai, and April 3 against the Brazilians in Chiba in the new Women's Kirin Challenge Cup.

Japan will face Brazil on April 5 in Kobe.

U.S. coach Pia Sundhage, who led the Americans to second place in last year's World Cup, says "playing two of the world's best teams almost back to back will be a tremendous challenge for our entire roster."

Before that trip, the Americans will play in the Algarve Cup in Portugal, an event the United States has won eight times.

Iran calls new US sanctions 'psychological war'

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran has dismissed the new U.S. sanctions on Tehran, with the Foreign Ministry spokesman saying Tuesday they are part of a "psychological war" meant to sow discontent among Iranians and insisting the measures would not halt the country's nuclear program.

Washington ordered the new penalties on Monday, giving U.S. banks additional powers to freeze assets linked to the Iranian government and close loopholes that officials say Iran has used to move money despite earlier restrictions imposed by the U.S. and Europe.

The United States and its allies suspect Iran's nuclear activities are geared toward producing an atomic weapon. Iran denies the charge, insisting its controversial uranium enrichment program is only for peaceful purposes, such as power production.

Ramin Mehmanparast, the foreign ministry spokesman, said Iran's central bank has no financial transactions with the United States and would not be affected by the measures.

He told reporters in Tehran on Tuesday that the penalties are just "propaganda."

"Many of these (U.S.) activities are in the sphere of psychological war and propaganda, and they cannot affect our work," he said.

"When they impose sanctions on our central bank even though we have no transactions with them, it shows ... they think they are able to put pressure on our people. create concerns and social discontent," he added.

The new, stricter sanctions, authorized in legislation that President Barack Obama signed in December, will be enforced under an order he signed Sunday. The measures target Iran's Central Bank and its other financial institutions, intended to complicate the country's ability to conduct international commerce.

The U.S. and Europe want to deprive Iran of the oil income it needs to run its government and pay for the nuclear program. But many experts believe Iran will be able to find other buyers outside Europe.

Mehmanparast insisted the penalties will have no effect and would not halt Iran's nuclear program.

"When you apply the highest level of your power to impose sanctions on a nation and that nation continues on its path decisively, it proves you do not have enough power to halt it," he said, addressing the U.S.

"These measures will not have enough impact on Iran," Mehmanparast said. "These miscalculations will bear no fruit for the U.S. and Western countries."

(AP) ? Parties backing Greece's coalition government will hold a second day of emergency talks Monday on a vital austerity deal with rescue creditors, after an intense weekend of negotiations failed to produce a breakthrough needed to avert bankruptcy in March.

Prime Minister Lucas Papademos will meet with negotiators from the eurozone and the International Monetary Fund in the afternoon and then with the leaders of the three parties backing his coalition.

The parties all publicly oppose steep cuts in private sector pay demanded by the eurozone and IMF, but their backing is needed for the government to reach a deal for the bailout, which must be approved by the Greek Parliament.

The new euro130 billion ($171 billion) bailout deal is vital for Greece to avoid bankruptcy next month as it cannot cover a euro14.5 billion ($19.1 billion) bond repayment due March 20 without the rescue funds.

The debt-crippled country has been kept solvent since May 2010 by payments from a euro110 billion ($145 billion) international rescue loan package. When it became clear the money would not be enough, a second bailout was decided last October.

Its implementation depends on the austerity measures but also on separate talks with banks and other private bondholders to forgive euro100 billion ($131.6 billion) in Greek debt, in exchange for a cash payment and new bonds with more lenient repayment terms.

Over the weekend, Greek officials held a conference call with eurozone finance ministers, as well as more talks in Athens with EU-IMF debt inspectors, senior bank negotiators, and Greek political party leaders, to try and hammer out a deal on the new cutbacks.

Greeks have already been subjected to a spate of austerity measures in return for the rescue loans, suffering significant cuts in pensions and salaries coupled with repeated tax hikes and an increase in retirement ages.

Angry at the prospect of new pain after two years of harsh austerity, Greece's main GSEE labor union and the ADEDY civil servants' union called a new general strike for Tuesday.

"Together with the GSEE, we have just decided to hold a 24-hour strike tomorrow, to be accompanied by a protest march in central Athens," ADEDY secretary-general Ilias Iliopoulos told the AP.

An ADEDY statement said the proposed new cutbacks would "intensify the vicious cycle of recession and drive Greek society to despair."

Greece is in its fifth year of recession, while unemployment has hit record highs of about 19 percent.

"The current policy of austerity ... is turning workers into pariahs, jobless people and pensioners into paupers and deprives our youth of any hope," the statement said. "This policy has already pushed Greeks beyond their limits and must be stopped at any cost."

An announcement from Papademos' office late Sunday said agreement had been reached to cut 2012 spending by 1.5 percent of gross domestic product ? about euro3.3 billion ($4.3 billion) ? improve competitiveness by slashing wages and non-wage costs, and re-capitalize banks without nationalizing them.

But the three coalition backers ? Socialist George Papandreou, Conservative Antonis Samaras and George Karatzaferis of the rightwing populist LAOS party ? differed as to what this would mean in detailed proposals.

Party leaders had undertaken to provide an initial response on the demanded cutbacks before their Monday evening meeting with Papademos, a Socialist party spokesman said. However, the prime minister's office said there was no formal demand for a response, while the conservatives and LAOS said they were not planning to issue one.

"We are in the middle of a major struggle. Right now, the developments are satisfactory," said Karatzaferis, adding that EU-IMF negotiators had backed away from a demand to ax annual salary installments given to Greek workers as holiday bonuses.

Rescue lenders are also seeking firings in Greece's large public sector, a drop in the euro750 ($985) gross minimum monthly wage, and cuts in lump-sum retirement payouts, as part of a long list of cost-cutting demands.

Also Monday, left wing opposition parties are planning two separate protest rallies in central Athens at 6:00 p.m. (1600GMT), against the proposed cuts.

Stocks slip on Wall Street as Greek talks drag on

(AP Photo/Richard Drew)

(AP) ? Stock indexes closed slightly lower Monday as talks dragged on between Greek political leaders over a fresh cost-cutting package required for the country to get more bailout loans.

On an otherwise quiet day, energy stocks were among the few to rise. Exxon Mobil, Chevron and Schlumberger each rose 1 percent.

President Nicolas Sarkozy of France and German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned Greek leaders that they need to push through the measures or risk letting the country go bankrupt.

Greece is hoping the European Central Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the European Commission will release a second installment of $170 billion in loans. Without that money, Greece will likely default when a bond repayment comes due March 20.

In Greece, talks between the prime minister and leaders of parties backing his coalition government were postponed for a day, even as European leaders prodded the government to push through new spending cuts, layoffs and other austerity measures.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 17.10 points to close at 12,845.13. Travelers Cos. Inc. led the Dow lower with a 1.3 percent loss.

In other trading, the Standard & Poor's 500 index slipped 0.57 of a point to 1,344.33. The Nasdaq composite fell 3.67 points to 2,901.99.

Sam Stovall, chief equity strategist at S&P Capital IQ, thinks investors are starting to wonder if the stock market's recent stretch of calm trading is a prelude to a big drop. Trading has turned subdued compared with the wild swings of 2011. The S&P has closed up or down by more than 1 percent only three times this year. In December, that happened nine times.

"I look at it like a very-low-tide warning of an impending tsunami," Stovall said. "We're setting ourselves up for a decline, the sort of decline that would make you sit up and take notice."

Large gains in the market, like the Dow's 156-point surge Friday, are often followed by relatively modest moves as traders pull some of their winnings off the table. Since 1950, whenever the S&P rose by 1 percent or more in a trading day, the index has inched up an average of just 0.1 percent the next day, according to S&P Capital IQ.

Among companies making big moves:

? Boeing Co. fell 1.2 percent following reports that the company found a problem in its 787 Dreamliner. The aircraft maker said it was working to fix it and that there was no safety concern.

? Micron Technology Inc. fell 2.8 percent following news that the chip maker's CEO died in a plane crash. Steve Appleton, 51, was at the helm for 18 years, leading the only company he'd ever worked for.

? Verizon Communications and Coinstar Inc. edged up after the companies said they will launch a video-streaming service later this year, a challenge to Netflix. Coinstar is the parent of Redbox, a DVD rental company. Coinstar rose 1.8 percent and Verizon 0.8 percent.

? Humana dropped 5.4 percent. The health insurance company reported revenue that fell short of analysts' expectations. Humana also raised its earnings outlook for 2012 but that, too, was below analysts' forecast.

94% Pina

All Critics (72) | Top Critics (20) | Fresh (68) | Rotten (4) | DVD (1)

Pina is a tribute of an artist by an artist, a friend to a friend. But its great genius comes from the mournful, as well as celebratory, reckoning of the performers Bausch pushed, collaborated with and inspired.

What might seem like a convenient bid for publicity - the first 3-D art-house film! - turns out to be the only logical way to showcase the action.

This meditation on movement and space, transportation and transcendence is not to be missed.

What the filmmaker has created is an inspired simulacrum - a jewel-box that contains more of Bausch's kinetic soul than film has any right to.

Crane and steadycam allow Wenders to get so close to the action that in the minimalist Caf? M?ller, one's illusion of being on stage is uncanny.

"Pina"is the best possible tribute to Bausch, and to adventurous image-making.

Wenders and the Tanztheater company have combined to offer a masterful tribute to Bausch's unique vision, one that's enhanced by 3D.

A spectacular show of movement and stagecraft.

Sans 3D, Pina becomes a more unified work of undisputed merits, a passionate, fitting tribute from one of Europe's preeminent filmmakers and documentarians.

Pina is as rich in imagery and emotion as any film released this year and in some cases moreso.

This seems like a ripping good idea. In practice, "Pina" turns out to have a few problems.

Suggests thrilling new possibilities for the marriage of movies and dance.

Wenders, who so wanted to see the world through Pina's eyes, has done something even better. He's allowed posterity to see her world, and in a way as breathtaking as the work itself.

Even for someone who would rather count sheep than attend a ballet, these scenes are nothing short of astonishing, beautifully presenting dance's ability to depict words.

A milestone in dance and 3D filmmaking.

You won't hear the names Merce Cunningham, Martha Graham, Paul Taylor or Bob Fosse breathed herein.

An exhilarating experience, both in its celebration of Bausch's groundbreaking work and in the thrilling way that Wenders captures it on camera.

It's not an overview of Bausch's career or a statement on her art, but a celebration of her work and the dancers who bring it to life.

Career as a Music Therapist - ARTSANDENTERTAINMENTARTICLE

Music therapy makes use of the physical and mental healing properties of music to help treat a range of different ailments. Drum therapy came from the ancient traditions of shamanic drumming and is a specific type of music therapy. Drum therapy has been scientifically proven to promote healing and is not the new-age fad which may have previously been suggested.

Mongolian shamans and West African healers use drumming in their culture for healing. Some Native American groups have made their traditional drumming a part of alcoholism recovery programs. The drum is commonly used to unite people and bring about a trance-like state. Drumming is used by music therapists with patients who find it difficult or impossible to express themselves in other ways.

Modern researchers have turned their attention to drum therapy. Scientific studies have proven its effectiveness, and have verified that it boosts the immune system and provides exercise. Drumming can activate the body?s natural pain-killing endorphins. Using the aspects of drumming proven to give health benefits, researchers have developed the HealthRHYTHMS Drumming Protocol. Remo, the drum head manufacturer, supports the HealthRHYTHMS Drumming Protocol in partnering with music therapists.

Drumming enhances thought processes through rhythm which synchronizes the brain?s hemispheres and cortices. Because drumming activates so many different parts of the brain, it can help to overcome nerve damage, such as that suffered in a stroke. Drumming also reduces the damaging effects of stress. A study of nursing home employees who took part in weekly drumming sessions noticed a stress reduction of about 62%, plus a significant reduction in employee turnover over the following year. An additional study saw a reduction in student dropout rates, while yet another identified discipline improvements among troubled youths.

It is the job of practitioners to make their patients comfortable with instruments. Drum circles can contain participants of varying levels of musical experience, so the less experienced are brought along gradually. Drumming involves the layering of simple patterns in order to create a beautiful and complex tapestry, each individual plays an essential part. While the parts give each participant an opportunity to participate in teamwork, improvisation allows them to express themselves freely and openly. Just as drumming synchronizes the parts of the brain, it brings together the drummers in the circle. A profession as a music therapists can be very rewarding, it provides a different path down which musicians can progress.

Thinking of buying a djembe drum? The Djembe Drum Shop has a number of djembe drums, both modern and traditional, in various sizes and styles ? check out www.djembedrumshop.com.

Kenya miltiary: some 100 Somali militants killed (AP)

NAIROBI, Kenya ? The spokesman for Kenya's military says an estimated 100 Somali militants were killed after helicopter gunships targeted a gathering of more than 200 al-Shabab fighters in Somalia.

Maj. Emmanuel Chirchir said Friday that the gunships targeted a meeting where close to 20 al-Shabab vehicles were gathered near Badhade.

The claim could not be independently verified. Al-Shabab had no immediate comment on its Twitter feed, the same microblogging site that Chirchir used to make Friday's announcement.

Kenyan forces moved into Somalia in October to fight al-Shabab after a rash of attacks on Kenyan soil.

Elsewhere, gunmen opened fire in the Kenyan town of Garissa on Friday, killing two people, government official James Ole Sereni said.

Don't Forget Your Travel Insurance | World Hotels Travel

Travel insurance can be simple and affordable and there is no need to let it daunt you as it is a necessity if you are travelling abroad and it can really help to recover any money owed to you throughout your vacation. Travel insurance is designed in such a way that it provides you with compensation for anything that could go belly up while you are away on your holiday or business trip.

Travel insurance can be simple and affordable and there is no need to let it scare you as it is a necessity if you are travelling abroad and can help to recover money owed to you throughout your vacation. Travel insurance is designed in such a way that it compensates you for anything that could go wrong while you are away on your holiday or business trip.

Spending time in a city where you do not speak the tongue or know how to get around in itself can make a traveller feel nervous so why add to it by neglecting to get travel insurance while you?re away? Travel insurance can make a traveller feel safer and more confident that if anything did happen to go wrong, there would be adequate assistance to help them get through.

Regardless of the length of your travels and where you travel to, it is advisable to always ensure you have a comprehensive travel insurance policy which covers you for repatriation to your home country.

Medical cover with your travel insurance should be top of your list as different countries have very different health systems and their medical professionals can vary widely when it comes to levels of skill and education.

It is worth noting that if you need medical care while you are in Africa, it is best to be aware of the fact that medical providers may not accept payment through your insurance company. In these circumstances you will have to pay in full following your treatment and thereafter file a claim with your insurance company for reimbursement. You should, therefore, have access to cash from either a credit card or by wire transfer. If you are in need of assistance contact the country?s local embassy or representative thereof.

When determining whether travel insurance is right for you, ask yourself the following basic questions: Can I afford the financial risk of losing my vacation investment if something goes wrong due to illness, weather, or other unforeseen circumstances? With accidents or illness often unavoidable, proper travel insurance is very important in this context.

If you?re about to buy your cheap travel insurance online, have a look at our competitive and trustworthy travel insurance policies.
