From the Android Forums: Importing contacts and Nexus updates

Importing contacts

LolUmad asks in the Android Central Forums:

Hello.

I just sold my Nokia 920 and got a Nexus 4. I have two questions for the aware:

  1. All of my contacts had to be imported in from my microsoft.live account. How do I add them all to my Google account (so that next time I get another android phone I can just have them imported in automatically)?
  2. How do software updates work? Automatically or do I have to do something.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome aboard, and we're glad you asked! Your first question is a pretty common one, and luckily it's also a really easy one thanks to the settings built into Gmail. Since you're coming from a Windows Live account, you can have Google import your contacts automatically via the web. Open your Gmail account in a web browser on a computer, and look for the settings icon in the upper right. Open the settings, choose the "Accounts and Import" tab, and in the list choose "Import mail and contacts". This will copy everything over to your Gmail account, which syncs with any Android device you're signed in to.

For anyone not using a web-based service like Windows Live, importing contacts is still pretty easy. Just export them from your mail client into a .csv file and you can import that file in your Google Contacts page. Either way sure beats typing them all by hand.

For your second question. the answer is both! Updates will come automatically from Google to your Nexus 4, and you'll know you have one because of the notification icon. Google rolls the updates out pretty slowly at first, and many times we don't like to wait. You can sideload an update pretty easily if you're the type who doesn't like waiting in line. It involves a little work at your computer's command line, but it's not really hard. You can find all the information you would every want to know about sideloading updates in the Nexus 4 forums.

Have a question you need answered? (Preferably about Android, but we're flexible.) Hit up our Contact Page to get in touch!

Sub Domain SEO - UK Business Forums

Hi there.

Having the store in a sub-domain isn't ideal from an SEO point of view; if you want to run both platforms, then I imagine putting the shop within a folder on the main domain would be the best compromise.

This should be doable. But it your technical abilities won't allow you to do so; you should still get away with having the store in a sub-domain.

Technically, Google treats sub-domains as separate sites, so your store won't automatically be afforded much/any authority from the main domain.

I would recommend that you make your navigation from domain to sub-domain as seemless as possible; For instance, you could have a common header-navigation which has links to pages on both sites:

Ie; Your store's homepage, and ideally category pages should be reachable via your main navigation on the main domain.

Also, you need to get the look and feel of the two different front-ends as similar as possible. Ideally so that users who move from the joomla site to the open cart site don't notice any change.

A seamless user experience is obviously important for conversions anyway, but by unifying the whole thing as seamlessly as possible, Google should for the most part treat them as much the same site.

Hope that helps.

Child-care worker charged in Philadelphia girl's abduction, rape

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - A child-care worker accused of disguising herself in traditional Muslim clothing to abduct a 5-year-old girl was arraigned on Friday on rape and kidnapping charges and held on $4 million bail.

Seized as a key piece of evidence in the case was a multi-colored macaw that the child told authorities lived in the home where she had been held captive overnight last month, police and the victim's lawyer, Tom Kline, said.

Authorities have questioned four people in the case but so far charged only Christina Regusters, 19, who worked at an after-school program in West Philadelphia that the victim attended.

Regusters was accused of posing as the girl's mother, who wears Muslim clothing, by dressing in a black headscarf that covered her face in order to take the child out of school on January 14.

Early the next morning, the child was discovered in a nearby playground, partially clothed.

Regusters was arraigned on Friday on 14 criminal counts, including rape, aggravated assault, kidnapping and indecent assault.

"It's just a horrible, horrible crime, what they did to her," Kline said.

The talking bird, seized with a search warrant, was being held by the city's animal control division, said Captain John Darby, head of the police Special Victims Unit.

Kline declined to confirm local media reports that the assailants used the bird to force the child into silence and submission and threatened it would peck out her eyes if she disobeyed. He said information about the bird led to Regusters' arrest.

"It was the fact that the bird was present that was significant, not any particular thing the bird said," Kline said.

Neither Kline nor Darby would provide details of the rape charge against Regusters.

Darby said originally three other occupants of the West Philadelphia house were taken into custody as well, an adult man and woman, and a male juvenile. They have since been released.

"The investigation is still very active," said Darby, who declined to describe a motive.

After her arraignment, Regusters was held on $4 million bail and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for March 6, the office of the Philadelphia district attorney said.

Explain Yourself! Sony Vaio F Series

Explain yourself! corners the worst tech in our lives and demands to know: WTF?! This week: The dreaded Sony Vaio F Series, a lap-scorching behemoth that has plagued mobile editor Jeff Van Camp for years.

Oh ? Jeff. Jeff, Jeff, Jeff. I remember our first meeting like it was yesterday (and it often is, because my onscreen clock constantly resets itself).?

It was April 2010 when I spotted him. I had been sitting on a shelf at Best Buy for weeks, watching a bunch of wannabe computers come and go. I spent most of my days taunting the MacBooks across the aisle. Damn Apple computers think they?re so cool just because they get their own section of the store.?

Anyway, I could see this scrawny guy looking around with numbers in his eyes, checking out every yellow Spec card in the department, hunting for his dream when he saw me. I wasn?t a looker, but my numbers were something to behold: A Core i7, 6GB of DDR2 RAM, a 1080p screen, a 500GB hard drive, a 1GB Nvidia GeForce 330M graphics card, a Blu-ray/DVD-ripper combo drive, an HDMI port, and one of them fancy island-style keyboards like the MacBooks (screw you Macs!). You could have squeegeed the anticipation off his eyes. My price tag was well north of a thousand bucks, but he wanted me, and he was just the kind of idiot that would go way over budget to get what he wanted.

Our relationship started out strong. He set me on a desk and I whirred the day away with the airplane exhaust fan Sony had installed inside me.?After a few months he started traveling and things got tense. He realized that I didn?t get half of the 4-hour battery life those Best Buy basterds said I got and my fans were so loud that he had to wear headphones just to hear his music. So he?d drag my enormous power supply around with him. But hell, my tiny six-cell battery liked the juice. It felt good!

The real fallout came when Jeff started trying to use me as a laptop and put me ? you know ? on his lap. He soon discovered what he would have known if he would have checked my warning labels: I?m one hot bitch! The bottom of my chassis actually gets so hot that it can sear human flesh. That?s on the label, too! It says I?ll burn you, and I will! I made sure to delete it from his inbox so he never knew, but I was even recalled a couple months after he bought me. Oh yeah. I?m pretty proud of this: The Consumer Product Safety Commission Protection said I?m a burning hazard.?

These days, I don?t get much action. Jeff tries to ignore me, but I?ve got his entire music collection and all those episodes of Friends he downloaded in college. He can?t leave me. I?m too important. And he can?t afford to buy anyone else. All he can do is yell and sigh in defeat every time I overheat and shut down (I do that now). And I don?t give a shit. There?s no way I was gonna spend my days in a recall pile. No. Goddamn. Way.

I have no regrets. YOLO, bitches!

NEC Provides Energy Storage Systems for Smart Grid in Rome

    Energy Manager Today Staff

NEC Italia and Acea, the Italian multi-utility serving the Rome metropolitan area, are working together to develop lithium-ion Energy Storage Systems (ESS) to be implemented in Acea?s primary and secondary power substations.

The parties signed an agreement in December 2012, marking the beginning of a partnership framework for enhancing smart grid development in Rome. NEC will deliver two ESS (180 kW/100 kWh and 100 kW/50 kWh) which represent the key elements of Acea?s smart grid project designed to improve the quality of utility services, reduce energy losses and improve the management of distributed energy generators, such as photovoltaic systems and wind power systems.

The ESS will start operation in September 2013 and contribute to several applications that include peak shaving/time shifting of power consumption, power balancing, power-system stabilization and power outage backup.

The 180 kW/100 kWh ESS connected to Acea?s low-voltage electricity grid will serve as an emergency backup power source in the event of a utility grid outage. The 100 kW/50 kWh ESS, coupled with Acea?s photovoltaic power plant and connected to its mid-voltage electricity grid, improve service quality and continuity of distributed energy generators by compensating for power fluctuations. The ESS were designed by the NEC EMEA Energy competence center which was established in Italy in 2011.

In addition, NEC will provide a real-time monitoring system for the temperature and charge-discharge status of ESS, which assures system safety and reliability.

Gay teen wins right to attend prom with boyfriend

    Southern Poverty Law Center

Stacy Dawson, a Missouri high school student, had been told he couldn't attend prom with his boyfriend.

By Elizabeth Chuck, Staff Writer, NBC News

An openly gay Missouri teenager has won the right to attend high school prom with his boyfriend after threatening legal action, the district superintendent said Friday.

Stacy Dawson, a 17-year-old senior at Scott County Central High School in Sikeston, Mo., had been told last year that he couldn't bring his boyfriend due to a line in the school's handbook that said "students will be permitted to invite one guest, girls invite boys and boys invite girls."

When Dawson questioned the policy, he was told by a school administrator that the school board would not consider revising it, according to The Southern Poverty Law Center, a nonprofit civil rights organization representing Dawson. So on Thursday -- Valentine's Day -- Dawson had The Southern Poverty Law Center send a letter to Scott County Central High and the school district threatening legal action.

One day later, the district had good news for Dawson: They were removing the offending line from their handbook, and said the line was never meant to be exclusive in the first place.

"I found out why the stipulation in the student handbook was originally put in there, and it's rather innocent, to be honest," Alvin McFerren, Scott County Central School District superintendent, said. "This was during a time 10-15 years ago that the previous administration was having issues with some of the students trying to come in on either the single rate or the couple rate. They implemented that to make sure they couldn't circumvent the rates that students were supposed to pay as they entered into our dances."

McFerren said Dawson will be allowed to go to prom with his boyfriend.

"It was never intended to be a discriminatory thing," he said. "We want an educational environment for all of our kids and we're not ever going to discriminate as to whether or not the board has the policy and we don't do that based on sexual orientation. Period."

McFerren said he felt the community, which has just over 360 students in the entire district, would take the change well.

"We are a family," McFerren said. "We're such a small school that I don't feel as if there will be any negative reactions whatsoever. It was never intended to be a policy that would create any controversy in the first place."

In its letter to the school and district, the law center had alleged that under a 1969 Supreme Court decision -- Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District -- Dawson's school could not legally censor his right to free expression, including the right to express himself by taking a same-sex date. The Tinker ruling declared that students don't ?shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gates.?

The letter also cited a more recent case out of Mississippi, where a girl sued her high school over a ban on same-sex couples at the prom in 2010. Constance McMillen ultimately won the case against Itawamba County Agricultural High School after a federal judge ruled that the school district violated her constitutional rights to freedom of speech by not allowing her to wear a tuxedo and bring her girlfriend to the prom.

Scott County Central High's prom is scheduled for April 20. Dawson's lawyer said the change was welcome, but that the law center had yet to receive written confirmation the policy has been removed from the student handbook.

"If it is indeed true that the policy has been permanently changed, it represents a big step forward for LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) students in a part of the country that frequently lacks community support for students like Stacy," Alesdair Ittelson, staff attorney for the law center, said.

Single In D.C. On Valentine's Day? Treat Yourself!

WASHINGTON -- D.C. doesn't have to be a lonely place if you're single on Valentine's Day. We spoke with recent D.C. ex-pat and author of "The Science of Single" Rachel Machachek for ideas on how to spend what could be a very uncomfortable day.

Whether you're male, female, tired or just want to dance, here are six ways to spend a fun day avoiding or embracing Cupid, Machachek has you covered:

    • Potomac River

Short of jumping in the Potomac because you're still single, my thoughts for a solid single Valentine's hang includes...

    • Sephora

Go to Sephora for a make over, not because you need it but because it will be fun and make you feel awesome. They will do the makeover for free. They will also want you to buy the products they use on you. You are not obligated to buy anything of course, but most likely you will. I always aim for the cheapest item like the lip pencil because it can double as lipstick with a layer of gloss.

    • "The Americans"

Go home and take up residence in the middle of the bed BECAUSE YOU CAN. You are single. Enjoy it. Bring your laptop and catch up on the first three episodes of "The Americans," a new drama on FX set in Cold War-era DC. It has a superb eighties soundtrack, highwaisted jeans with pleats and Keri Russell being bitchy and slutty. It is amazing and the love relationship in it so effing complicated it will make you happy you're hanging solo.

    • Online Dating

Go online. Log on to OKCupid (or Match or Plenty of Fish or any other online dating site). Do you know how many single people will be clicking around on Valentine's Day? So many. Update your profile. And for god's sake, create a profile if you haven't already.

    • Politics And Prose

Scope out some new people. You can do this at home or better yet, go to a cozy coffee shop like Tryst or Chinatown Coffee or Modern Times (in Politics & Prose bookstore).

    • Black Cat

Go to the Black Cat for the Valentine's Day Rock & Roll Dance Party. Dance with the people. It's free. It starts at 8 p.m.

Machachek will be signing books today at the WPA Bakery in Richmond, Virginia and participating in Single and Social at the Virginia Repertory/Barksdale Theatre at Willow Lawn on Thursday, February 21.

Report: Jerry Buss hospitalized with cancer

Lakers owner Jerry Buss has been hospitalized with cancer, the Los Angeles Times reported Thursday.

The 79-year-old Buss has spent time in the intensive care unit at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, according to the Times, which quoted Buss' son, Jim, Thursday saying his father was "doing fine." Several current and former Lakers players, including Kobe Bryant and Magic Johnson, have visited Buss.

Team spokesman John Black said the team has no plans to comment on Buss' health out of respect for the family's wishes. Buss spokesman Bob Steiner said information would have to come from the Lakers.

"Dr. Jerry Buss, thinking about u & wish I could be there, get well soon," former Lakers center Shaquille O'Neal tweeted Thursday. "I cant wait 2 see u on 4/2/13 (hash)LoveYou."

The Lakers will retire O'Neal's No. 34 jersey on April 2.

Buss has been hospitalized several times in recent years, including a stint last July for dehydration. He was treated for blood clots in his legs in December 2011.

A former aerospace engineer and real-estate developer, Buss has been a prominent name in American sports since he bought the Lakers, the NHL's Los Angeles Kings and the Forum from Jack Kent Cooke in 1979. Buss immediately transformed the Lakers into the NBA's most glamorous franchise, winning 10 NBA championships under his watch.

The Lakers won five titles in nine years during the 1980s, earning a reputation as basketball's most exciting team with their glamorous Showtime style led by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Johnson, who was Buss' first draft pick. O'Neal and Kobe Bryant then led the Lakers to a threepeat from 2000-02 under coach Phil Jackson before Bryant and Pau Gasol won two more titles in 2009 and 2010.

Buss' children moved into leadership roles with the Lakers in recent years. Jim Buss, the Lakers' executive vice president of player personnel and the second of Buss' six children, has taken a leading role in basketball decisions, while daughter Jeanie plays a major role in running the franchise's business side.

Yet Jerry Buss was deeply involved the Lakers' most recent major moves, including the acquisitions of Steve Nash and Dwight Howard last summer, along with the firing of coach Mike Brown and the hiring of Mike D'Antoni early this season.

Texas Dems want immigration talks back at Capitol

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- National Republican activist and powerbroker Grover Norquist told a conservative forum Wednesday that his party is not anti-immigrant, even though many people have been led to believe so by a small, vocal group of extremists.

His sentiments came hours after a pair of Democrats in the Texas House called on the Republican-controlled state Legislature to pass a resolution urging leaders in Washington to enact nationwide immigration reform as the White House and Congress propose new paths to citizenship for an estimated 11 million people in the U.S. illegally.

Norquist is president of Americans for Tax Reform, but lately has advocated for overhauling the nation's immigration laws. He said the majority of Republicans are with him -- not the extremists.

"We've had some very loud voices, unnecessarily angry voices, that have been too loud and the reason that they've been loud and been heard is that the other people, the people here, have been silent," Norquist said, referring to business and religious leaders who gathered at a Baptist church in Austin for the forum.

Norquist said the party got saddled with the wrong message because of radio talk show hosts and TV commentators who "get described as very conservative."

"That's why I think our presidential candidates, even though in their heart many of them weren't there, started sounding pretty goofy on immigration during the last election," he said.

Norquist said Republicans relate to Hispanic voters on social issues such as opposing abortion, but "you never get to the second part of the conversation until you've gotten across that you're not threatening to deport their friends, their family, their relatives, their co-workers."

Texas has a 1,200-mile border with Mexico and nearly 2 million illegal immigrants, and many conservatives in the state have a softer view on immigration than some of their colleagues elsewhere. In fact, Gov. Rick Perry was criticized while seeking the Republican presidential nomination in 2011 for his support of offering cheaper, in-state university tuition to illegal immigrants who attended high school in Texas.

Brad Bailey, co-founder of the Texas Immigration Solution, which seeks market-based immigration reforms, noted Wednesday that the Texas Republican Party last year softened its platform on immigration, acknowledging that mass deportation isn't possible and calling for a guest worker program.

"A lot of people are interested that Arizona is taking one route and Texas is taking another," Bailey said, referring to that state's strict immigration policies. "Both are conservative, red states."

Norquist also broke with some Texas Republicans -- including U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz -- who have long called for securing the U.S.-Mexico border before tackling immigration reform.

"The answer from the standpoint of people who care about liberty is: If you've got a stupid law, you change it," he said. "You don't enforce it first. You change it and make it a reasonable law. And then you can enforce a reasonable law."

He added that "Texas' voice on making sure the center right movement, conservatives, Republicans, Americans are seen properly on this issue is extremely important."

State lawmakers may get their chance to do that if they back Wednesday's resolution introduced by State Reps. Rafael Anchia and Ana Hernandez Luna.

Both are hoping for GOP support, and Luna said the head of the House Republican Caucus told her the party's lawmakers will not propose any more immigration bills than the small handful already filed this session.

Anchia said the resolution largely supports the reforms put forth by a bipartisan U.S. Senate panel last month, which include a provision for border-state leaders to essentially declare when the border is sufficiently secured.

During the last legislative session two years ago, Texas Republicans filed more than 50 contentious bills on immigration. But Anchia said the tone in the Capitol has changed.

"People want to do something positive in immigration after the last couple legislative sessions where we've heard a lot of negative rhetoric from the Republican caucus," he said. "Many in the caucus were frustrated by that, they're tired of that and now they want to do something positive on this issue."

Singapore Media Outlet e27 Gets $615K, Plans Southeast Asia Expansion

e27 logoSingaporean media outfit, e27, has raised about US$615,000 (S$760,000) through a funding round with investors in the region, and plans to expand into Southeast Asia. The round was raised with B Dash Ventures from Japan, Pinehurst Advisors in Taiwan, Ardent Capital in Thailand and Dan Neary in Singapore. e27 has been around since 2006 and runs a news site on tech startups in Asia, and organizes conferences. Mohan Belani, e27?s CEO and co-founder, said that he is looking to hire editorial staff in Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines. The company?s focus, however, will remain on its annual flagship event called Echelon, he added. Last year, about 3,000 people attended Echelon, which also drew 50 startups and 150 investors. Echelon 2013 will be held on June 4 and 5 in Singapore this year. After this funding round, B Dash Ventures CEO, Hiroyuki Watanabe, will join e27?s board. Current members are Nic Lim (8capita) and founders, Belani and Thaddeus Koh. Belani said that the company has been bootstrapped so far, except for a small angel round raised in early 2012 by 8capita.

President vows to end long election wait times

Florida played a key role in President Barack Obama's State of the Union address to the nation Tuesday night.

The president pointed to the Sunshine State as the one that botched another election.

Many remember the long lines on Election Day with some people voting after midnight.

Obama pointed to Desiline Victor, a south Florida voter who waited six hours in line to cast a ballot.

"Desilene is 102 years old. They erupted into cheers when she put a sticker on that said, 'I voted,'" said Obama.

The president wants reforms, and already some local supervisors are trying to come up with creative ways to avoid future problems.

Early voting is the biggest part of it -- not just the number of days, but also giving election supervisors the flexibility to add locations, adjust the hours and even include the Sunday just prior to each election day.

Supervisors blamed fewer early voting days passed by Republican-led lawmakers in 2011.

"Unfortunately, the state has a troubled history in the area of election law," said David Gregory of NBC's "Meet The Press."

Gregory said Obama's call for a new commission to examine election problems nationally and in Florida should draw bipartisan support.

New Charlotte NFL stadium eyed in tax proposal?

A Charlotte City Council member says a tax proposal could pave the way for a new NFL stadium.

The chair of the Charlotte City Council?s economic development committee said the possibility of paying for a new NFL stadium or additional renovations played a role in the current proposal for a 30-year term on higher restaurant taxes. James Mitchell, a Democratic council member, mentioned the inevitable decline of the Carolina Panthers? stadium during an interview Tuesday afternoon with the Charlotte Business Journal.

On Friday, the city endorsed a $300 million proposal to make improvements and enhancements at the 17-year-old stadium. About two-thirds of the money would come from local and state taxpayers, including $144 million from the city if the state legislature approves a 1 percent increase on restaurant meals and drinks.

Mitchell said the city and council members have done a poor job of explaining the rationale behind the length of the higher tax.

?In another 15 years, the stadium will be 32 years old,? he said. ?Do you want to have to ask for more money? We can build a reserve and we can start building on amateur sports. It?s a 2-for-1.?

Since details of the tax proposal leaked last month, political experts have wondered how the excess revenue would be used. A 1 percent increase in the tax would generate $20 million annually, according to the city budget department, much more than would be necessary to finance $125 million in stadium improvements. The city proposal disclosed this month calls for the city to repay $125 million of its $144 million contribution through a 15-year debt financing backed by the restaurant tax.

The legislation requested by the city would end the tax after 30 years.

What?s on Your CEO?s Mind? Dr. John Lechleiter To Deliver Xavier University Keynote Address

    ?

    Xavier University, Cincinnati

Just across the river from my home state of Kentucky, Cincinnati boasts every manner of?well-respected icons of?academia, all framed against the Ohio River. Xavier University is one of the nation?s finest, and today?s guest post highlights Dr. Marla Phillips, Ph.D., Director of Health Initiatives at Xavier University, talking through their plans for an important conference early next month. If you haven?t made St. Patrick?s Day plans yet and you?re interested in biopharmaceutical innovation, consider putting Cincinnati?s PharmaLink on your list?

"In the 7 years I worked for Merck, I saw our CEO three times. ?Each time was so memorable as it framed where our company was going based on global economic factors, pipeline strategy, and maximizing our strengths internally.? This high level strategy helped make sense of the decisions we were making on a daily basis.? It showed us the picture of the completed puzzle and how we as pieces all fit in.? So I challenge you: how well do you know where your CEO is headed and what is on the forefront of his or her mind?? It might help you make sense of your job!

We?re excited to host one of the most influential thought leaders in the biopharmaceutical industry here at Xavier in just over a month, as Eli Lilly CEO and Xavier alum Dr. John Lechleiter joins us on campus to deliver the keynote address on ?Painting the Future of Innovation?.? The 4th annual FDA co-sponsored Xavier University PharmaLink Conference will highlight what?s necessary for the United States to maintain its status as a leader in innovation ? and why that leadership is critical to patients.

When I left Merck, I was very passionate about the dysfunction I saw between biopharmaceutical companies and their suppliers and contract manufacturers ? basically, ?I?m right, and you need to do it my way.? ??I find that the neutral ground of the university has led to unbelievably collaborative conversations?our speakers have literally said ?this is how I contribute to the problem?, instead of ?everyone else is wrong and they need to change?.? PharmaLink is one of the only conferences in the world where the agenda is so intensely designed and our hand-selected speakers orchestrate content that will make a difference.

Dr. Lechleiter will be joined by colleagues from around the world taking a deeper dive on topics that influence the biopharmaceutical industry, including

    • Hussain Mooraj:? Accenture, presents on the Future of Pharma
    • Steve Solomon:? FDA Office of the Commissioner, presents ?Beyond our Borders? and will join ?The FDA Safety and Innovation Act Workshop?
    • Global Regulators:? MHRA, Swissmedic, and Fimea will present inspection findings and trends, new EU directives, and future expectations.
    • Pfizer, Amgen, and Eli Lilly:? speakers will dive deep on topics to share working models for implementation

Pairing Sauce With Pasta - Under The Tuscan Gun

    Pairing Sauce With Pasta

If you live in Italy, the best way to get the neighbors to gossip about you is by serving pasta with the wrong sauce.?Sure, there are over 600 different types of Italian pasta, but without the sauce nobody will want to eat the dish. While food naturally pairs better with certain wines, so too certain pastas pair better with certain sauces. Pici wants rag?, for example and that?s how Italians see it. Basta.

So how can you know which sauce goes with what pasta?

    First, A Little History

A sauce is a liquid or semi-liquid food meant to make other foods look, smell and taste better. Sauces have probably been around since the beginning of Western civilization. In particular, during the days when refrigeration wasn?t available, sauces hid the flavors of old or spoiled foods.

Going all the way back to Roman times, the most commonly used sauce was liquamen, a very strong fish stock made with anchovies. Among the Romans, liquamen was so popular that it was factory-produced in many towns of the Empire. Another sauce that likely existed since ancient Greek times was pesto?fresh herbs, garlic and olive oil pounded together in a mortar.

    Spaghetti and Tomato Sauce

The pairing of spaghetti with tomato sauce probably didn?t happen until about the 17th century. Tomatoes were originally a product of the Andes and didn?t arrive to Italy until the 15th century. The earliest recipe found for tomato sauce by itself is Antonio Latini?s 1692 cookbook from Naples, Lo scalco alla moderna. Then, one hundred years later, Francesco Leonardi published L?Apicio Modern in which he gave a recipe for pasta with tomato sauce.

In the United States, this combination didn?t happen until the 1920?s when it became commonplace in restaurants. Since then, an explosion of innovation has increased the number of sauces for pasta.

    Types of Sauces

In my favorite Italian book, Pasta: Passione e Fantasia, chefs Antonio Chiodi Latini and Mario Busso identify six main sauces that pair with pasta:

Tomato sauce:?Tomato pulp usually simmered with garlic, onion and basil. Their additional advice is to add a half teaspoon of sugar to take away the acidic taste.

Cheese sauce: Made from butter, flour, milk and a variety of cheeses ranging from gorgonzola and gruyere to fontina and parmesan, the longer fresh pastas, such as fettuccini, go well with these sauces.

Meat sauce (or rag?): The most important part of these sauces are all kinds of ground meat, although for flavor they are usually simmered with vegetables, such as onions, carrots and celery. Long and thick fettuccini works well with rag??sauces.

Vegetable sauce:?Diverse types of cut vegetables can be made into a sauce with fresh herbs sprinkled over the top. Italians like to keep their vegetables crunchy and this sauce is usually prepared with what?s in season. The fresh long tagliolini pasta work especially well for these sauces.

Fish sauce: Fish sauces today can use calamari, mussels, shrimp, salmon or trout. Simmered together with onions, garlic, celery, tomatoes and herbs, these are far fresher and less smellier than the ancient liquamen. Long types of bavette (a narrower version of tagliatelle) go well with these sauces.

Herb sauce: Basically a warmed butter sauce sprinkled with fresh herbs of any kind, these sauces go with any fresh or dry pasta.

    The Pairings

The number of sauce variations from these six are endless, so it?s hard to keep up. But fear not, Chow?has developed a cheat sheet for those who?d like to get their pasta and sauce pairings just right. And for those who want to avoid the gossip, but have trouble keeping it all straight: when in doubt, penne or the classic spaghetti goes well with just about every sauce.

The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr crowned NME Genius

LONDON (Reuters) - Guitarist and songwriter Johnny Marr who made his name with cult British rock band The Smiths in the 1980s was named on Tuesday as the winner of this year's NME Godlike Genius Award.

Marr, 49, founded The Smiths with Morrissey in 1983 and the two musicians co-wrote the band's songs for four albums before going their separate ways in 1987.

The guitarist has also played with Billy Bragg, The Pretenders, The The, Modest House and The Cribs, and has led his own band, Johnny Marr and The Healers, for over a decade.

Marr will collect the award on February 27 when the music magazine holds its annual prize ceremony in London -- two days after he releases his debut solo album "The Messenger".

"The NME seems to be good at giving this award to people I like so I'm in good company. I guess it means that some things are alright with the world," Marr said in a statement.

NME editor Mike Williams said Marr had played a role in rewriting the history of music with The Smiths.

"He's continued to push boundaries and evolve throughout his career, working with some of the best and most exciting artists on the planet," said Williams.

Previous winners of the NME Godlike Genius Award include The Clash, Paul Weller, The Cure, Manic Street Preachers, New Order & Joy Division, and Dave Grohl. Last year's winner was Noel Gallagher.

NME awards are handed out in 22 categories with music fans casting votes.

This year four acts have received four nominations including the Rolling Stones, LA sisters Haim, Australian rock band Tame Impala and British alternative hip hop artist M.I.A.

Daily Chronicle | DeKalb mayoral candidates talk business ...

DeKALB ? In the past five years, nine new businesses have been developed in downtown DeKalb.

Eighteen new businesses have been developed along Sycamore Road, along with nine along Lincoln Highway and five along Annie Glidden Road. During the same time, the city?s overall equalized assessed property value has dipped about 10 percent from $645 million to $582 million.

Meanwhile, the city increased its general fund savings from $21,869 in 2010 to a projected $5 million, or about 17 percent of annual expenses in 2013. Overall, city staff was reduced from 237 full-time equivalent positions in 2009 to 211 this year.

These were some of the data and accomplishments City Manager Mark Biernacki recently presented city leaders to give a broad perspective of city government over the past five years. The four candidates seeking to lead DeKalb for the next four years applauded those accomplishments ? but they think more work is needed.

Both Mike Verbic, DeKalb school board member, and David Jacobson, First Ward alderman, voiced concerned about the number of empty storefronts in downtown DeKalb and elsewhere.

Verbic and Jacobson are facing former Re:New DeKalb executive director Jennifer Groce and Re:New DeKalb secretary John Rey in the April election. Mayor Kris Povlsen is not seeking re-election.

The progress report lists only one new business development along South Fourth Street ? Dollar General. City officials and candidates have talked about the need for economic development in the area, including a new tax increment financing district. The city has two of the special property tax district, and leaders are exploring adding two more.

?We need to engage the public with these public projects like TIF,? Verbic said.

Jacobson said while the city has made progress, he is worried about the falling property tax revenues. With the city?s current tax increment financing districts both expiring by 2020, Jacobson said the city needs to find a way to re-develop without them.

Rey wants to improve the city?s ISO rating, which reflects the city?s fire protection capabilities and affects area insurance premiums. On a scale from zero to 10, with zero being the highest, DeKalb has a four.

?That could mean savings to homeowners in the form of fire insurance expenses,? Rey said, adding that this would have to be weighed against other priorities.

Biernacki?s report also noted that the city has saved $108,777 by outsourcing services, including economic development, inspections and engineering.

Verbic praised the work of City Attorney Dean Frieders of Frieders Law, LLC. Groce said she wants to explore other areas where the city can work with other governments, including the local school and park districts and even neighboring communities, to reduce duplication of services.

?What else can we do with local government to save residents money?? Groce said.

There are 22 hours, 19 minutes remaining to comment on this story.

Assert yourself gracefully ? Business Management Daily: Free ...

Research shows that women who are afraid to have an assertive conversation at work are more likely to want to leave their jobs. Rather than resign, you can learn how to have those conversations that might feel uncomfortable. Being assertive, when done with grace, ensures greater work satisfaction and can even lead to career advancement.

    Consider the following examples.

???Cynical Sam, whose passive-aggressive style includes snide remarks about co-workers, is at it once again. In the break room, his snarky comments about Mary, your co-worker, cause you to cringe inwardly. But this time, instead of slipping away quietly at the first opportunity, you could come to Mary?s defense, telling Sam, ?Gee, I don?t know why you would say that. I?ve never heard her speak of you that way.?

???Someone else always gets to be in charge of in-house office parties, and you?d like to play a role, but you?ve been denied the opportunity in the past. Time to speak up to your supervisor and say,? ?In the past two years, Janice has been in charge of the office events. I?d like to play a stronger role and I?m curious how to make this happen. I?ve already approached Janice twice and she tells me she doesn?t need my support.? ?

These previous two examples could be considered warm-ups for the following two topics, where many people have difficulty speaking up.

???Not feeling appreciated is a big reason people leave their jobs. So make sure you ask for feedback. You could choose to be direct and simply say to your supervisor, with a big smile and a humorous tone, ?Did you know that giving appreciation to employees is the number one factor to motivate them? On a serious note, if there?s something I?m not doing that prevents you from letting me know you?re pleased with my work, I?d love to address it.?

???What if you?re unhappy with your salary? Take the time to do the research and make a case for yourself based on what you?ve accomplished. Try to put a dollar figure on why you deserve a raise. Have you saved the company money? Increased revenue? Created greater customer loyalty? Document and deliver the goods.

A very important component of battery life is the care the skipper takes. That makes answers to this question somewhat moot. Recharging, checking water levels, etc. is very important to battery life. Some skippers have solar, some generators, some only engines. It's really a hard question to answer the way you put it. With good maintenance, well over 3 years should be the norm, easily.

I bought 6 marine deep cycles (85 ah) from costco for $480, 510 ah total and this is my house bank. Solar and windgen, never run the diesel for charging, well maybe 10 times in the last 3 1/2 years. I wasnt sure what to expect from them but they've been great. I checked the fluid in them for the first time a couple months ago and added a pint total. When they do die I wanna add more ah's, so I'll look to see what better value is available. I have reefer, auto pilot, LCD/DVD tv, stero, LED nav lights.

A good lead acid battery will give you about 5 years of service under good conditions. I have seen some last 7 or 8 and some only 2 but 5 is the rule of thumb.

Where I work we have started using SAFT batteries instead of lead acid an they are projected to last over 10. One issue is the newer batteries pull a crap ton of amps when recharging compared to lead acid. If your charge rsystem is not up to the extra load many headache may result.

Had a pair of Trojan L-16's on my last boat that were used hard for 3-1/2 years (often more than 50% discharged) cruising anchoring most of the time. After that they still had enough life for liveaboard and weekend cruising for another 3 years. They never died catastrophically, but the capacity was very low at the end.

    Varta starter 10 years.

Hella deep cycle 3+ years, Tudor Leisure 3+ years.

I bet the Hellas had some potential but I killed them with solar charging.

With lead acid, full time cruising how often are batteries equalized?I do mine every 3 or 4 months. Not sure if that is too much or not. With regular charging,I try to get into float more than once a week.

How so? No solar charge controller and thus frequent overcharging?
